Summary

East Lake Elementary in McDonough, GA, serves approximately 671 students in Pre-K through 5th grade as part of the Henry County School District, and it stands out as a top performer in its area with a 4-star rating and a statewide rank of 278th out of 1,219 Georgia elementary schools.

What truly sets East Lake apart is its exceptional math achievement. In the most recent school year, 4th graders posted a 70.9% proficiency rate in math—nearly double the district average of 37.6% and more than 20 points above the state average. Third and 5th graders also excelled, with proficiency rates of 64.3% and 53.9%, respectively, far outpacing district and state benchmarks. This strength has been consistent over multiple years. The school also shines in serving its African American students, ranking in the 92nd percentile statewide (5 stars) for this group—a notable achievement. Additionally, chronic absenteeism is remarkably low at 9.5%, less than half the district average of 19.6%, which points to strong student engagement and family involvement. While current English Language Arts scores are not yet available, historical data shows East Lake has consistently outperformed district averages in this subject as well.

Compared to nearby schools, East Lake is a clear standout. Among nine neighboring Henry County elementary schools, it ranks first by a wide margin. For example, in 4th grade math, proficiency rates at nearby schools like Wesley Lakes Elementary School (25.9%), Birch Creek Elementary School (20.7%), and Cotton Indian Elementary School (28.3%) lag far behind. The school also serves a comparatively more affluent population, with 46% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch versus 66-83% at most nearby schools. While 5th grade science (46.8% proficiency) offers room for growth, East Lake’s overall efficiency—spending $14,024 per student—and its strong results across student subgroups make it a compelling choice for families seeking a high-achieving, well-rounded elementary school in the McDonough area.

Open Quote I think East Lake would get a higher score from me if there was more communication from the teachers. I had one parent teacher conference this year, in October. I would find it more helpful if, instead of a weekly email about what they will be learning, an email on what I can do to help my child improve, would be more beneficial. As a 1st grader, this is the foundational years and yet my child's grades have been getting worse and worse. Some teachers use Dojo. I think they all should. Close Quote
