Summary

McDonough Middle School serves approximately 876 students in grades 6-8 in McDonough, GA, as part of the Henry County School District, where about 79% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

The most striking finding is the school's exceptional performance in advanced coursework. In Algebra I End of Course assessments, 68.7% of students scored proficient or above—nearly double the district average (35.1%) and well above the state average (48.1%). This represents a dramatic improvement from 26.8% proficiency just two years ago, and it now exceeds nearby schools like Stockbridge Middle School (61.1%) and Eagle's Landing Middle School (57.7%). Similarly, in 8th-grade Physical Science, 73.3% of students are proficient, surpassing both district (63.8%) and state (60.9%) averages. However, grade-level math proficiency remains a concern—only 16-22% of students in grades 6-8 score proficient, well below district and state averages. Science and social studies proficiency for 8th graders is also low (8.9% and 10.8%, respectively), though science has improved from a very low 2.4% in 2023-2024.

Chronic absenteeism has improved meaningfully, dropping from 32.1% in 2022-2023 to 24.1% currently, though it remains higher than nearby schools like Woodland Middle School (9.4%) and Union Grove Middle (6.8%). The school's overall ranking has improved from the 9th percentile to the 15th percentile statewide, and per-student spending has increased 38% over four years to $12,598. A nearby comparison with Impact Academy Middle School (just 0.71 miles away) shows that school achieving 48.4% proficiency in 6th-grade math versus 16.4% here, though Impact Academy has a smaller enrollment and a lower free/reduced lunch rate (51% vs. 79%). These trends suggest McDonough Middle is on an upward trajectory, particularly in advanced courses, though significant gaps remain in grade-level subjects.

Open Quote Horrible school. PRINCIPAL needs to be replaced. The bullying is Horrible, not to mention the majority of Unprofessional staff/teachers. If you are zoned to this school, I would suggest a school of choice. Close Quote

Open Quote One word....HORRIBLE! One of the worst schools I've ever experienced in this lifetime. This school is out of control. The kids are not disciplined and they are not even forced to follow rules. It's sad. Everytime I had to visit this school, I witnessed with my own eyes out of control youth with very & I mean very little redirection. So much gang activity. Listen to me, do your kid a favor and run from this HORRIBLE SCHOOL! Close Quote
