Summary

Pharr Elementary School in Snellville, GA, serves 816 students in Pre-K through 5th grade and is part of Gwinnett County Public Schools, a district ranked in the top third of Georgia districts. The school itself holds a 4-star rating and ranks 136th out of 1,219 elementary schools statewide (89th percentile), placing it firmly in the upper tier of Georgia's elementary schools.

What makes Pharr particularly noteworthy is its performance given its student demographics. With 64.2% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, Pharr achieves academic outcomes nearly identical to nearby higher-ranked schools that serve far fewer economically disadvantaged students. For example, Brookwood Elementary (rank 89) and Gwin Oaks Elementary (rank 100) both have poverty rates around 45-47%, yet Pharr trails them by only 13-36 spots in statewide ranking. In mathematics, Pharr outperforms the district by 9 to 23 percentage points across all grade levels, with 3rd grade math proficiency at 76.3%—nearly 28 points above the state average. The school's 5th grade science scores have also been consistently exceptional, maintaining a 23 to 42 percentage point advantage over the state average over the past four years.

Pharr also stands out for its remarkably low chronic absenteeism rate of 8.7%—less than half the state rate of 17.7%—and its favorable student-teacher ratio of 11.5, among the best in the area. The school invests more per student ($16,180) than most nearby high-performing schools, which likely contributes to its strong outcomes. While Pharr has seen a slight softening from its peak performance in 2018-2019, it has never ranked below the 85th percentile statewide since 2015-2016, and its 3rd and 4th grade math scores have actually improved recently. For parents seeking a school that delivers strong academic results while serving a diverse student population, Pharr Elementary represents a model of educational effectiveness within Gwinnett County.

Open Quote I did like this school but unfortunately grew to not like the school nor the staff that run it. I have dealt with issues concerning my child and Pharr staff have done nothing to help him. If you are a parent with a child with ADHD demand an IEP or 504 before its too late, the staff WILL NEVER request it and they have dropped the ball when it came to advising and providing assistance for my son. I had to end up pulling him out of the school because they lack the resource and ability to provide help when help was needed. The school lacks support for children in need, instead the continue to write him up and reprimand him for things he can't help. I am disgusted with the way Pharr have dealt with my son and his issues throughout the years. Close Quote

Open Quote I absolutely love this school. My daughter has attended since first grade (going into the fifth grade) and we have had fantastic teachers and the faculty is great. The principal takes time to work with the student council and is very approachable to the kids. We will miss Pharr when we go to middle school! Close Quote
