Summary

Sandtown Middle School in Atlanta, GA, serves 956 students in grades 6 through 8 within the Fulton County School District, and has climbed from the bottom quartile of Georgia middle schools a decade ago to the 51st percentile today—placing it in the top half statewide.

The school’s standout strength is its advanced math program. In the most recent school year, 86% of Sandtown students taking the Algebra I End-of-Course exam scored proficient—nearly double the state average (48.1%) and well above the district average (60.6%). This isn’t a one-time fluke; Sandtown has beaten both state and district Algebra I averages for four straight years. By comparison, nearby Renaissance Middle School posted 78.5% proficiency, Woodland Middle School 72.2%, and Camp Creek Middle School 69.8%. Sandtown also leads its immediate Fulton County peers in 8th-grade math and science—its 39.9% math proficiency is more than double Woodland’s 18.3%, and its 34.7% science rate is more than triple Woodland’s 11.7%. The school has also made a dramatic leap in 8th-grade science, jumping from 12.3% to 34.7% proficiency in just one year.

While standard grade-level math proficiency (27–40%) trails the district average, Sandtown clearly excels at accelerating high-achieving students. The school also earns a 4-star rating for its African American students, ranking in the 76th percentile statewide—a sign of strong support for this group. Chronic absenteeism (17.8%) is slightly above the state average but far better than neighbors like Woodland (43.5%) and Camp Creek (32.5%). One area for growth is 8th-grade social studies (31.3% proficient), which lags the district’s 52.1%. Overall, Sandtown is the clear academic leader among the five Fulton County middle schools within a 7-mile radius, making it a strong option for families in southwest Atlanta.

Open Quote My child is in the 10th grade. I was not impressed with the 8th grade staff but I truly loved his 6th and 7th Grade teachers. My child was not very vocal but his 7th Grade English teacher who was a very caring person instilled in him the importance of public speaking, my husband and I are forever grateful for that teacher. My son hated dressing out in Physical Education, but the P.E Coach spoke with him about importance of being physically fit and not my child wrestles. Every school has it good and bad parts, it is up to parents to stay active and involved. Close Quote

Open Quote We have lived in numerous parts of the Atlanta metro area, from Smyrna, to Sandy Springs, to Buckhead. By far, this is absolutely the worst school my child has ever attended. There is no diversity, which was expected in this part of town, but I did not expect the level of ghetto mentality that's here. The students, and many of the teachers give in to many negative stereotypes, and it's very unfortunate. The stories my child comes home with daily describes the kids as hoodlums and fast little girls.... Keep in mind, they're 6th graders. The teachers are also very disorganized and just throw work at the students, move on to the next thing & then blame the students for not turning in work. When I went for a parent teacher conference, with several teachers at once, they all told me that it's the WHOLE 6th grade doing extremely poorly, with an exception of few. Although we just bought our home last year, I am considering selling & moving. This just isn't what I expected from a school that is supposedly held to high standards according to their motto. Don't send your kids here if you want them to learn anything. Close Quote
