Summary

Camp Creek Middle School in Atlanta, GA, serves 748 students in grades 6-8 within the Fulton County School District, where 100% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school has consistently held a 1-star rating and currently ranks in the bottom quartile of Georgia middle schools, though it has shown modest improvement over the past decade, moving from the 11th percentile in 2015-2016 to the 23rd percentile today.

The school's biggest challenge is chronic absenteeism, with 32.5% of students missing significant school days—nearly double the district average of 16.6%. This is particularly striking when compared to nearby Sandtown Middle School, which serves a similar population but has just 17.8% chronic absenteeism and achieves dramatically better results across nearly every subject. For example, Sandtown's 6th-grade math proficiency (38.2%) is nearly triple Camp Creek's (13.7%). However, Camp Creek has one notable bright spot: its Algebra I proficiency rate of 69.8% exceeds both the district (60.6%) and state (48.1%) averages, and it has done so for four consecutive years. This suggests a strong advanced math pathway for select students, though it hasn't translated into broader school-wide gains.

Camp Creek spends $18,564 per student—more than several higher-performing nearby schools—and maintains a favorable 13.6:1 student-teacher ratio, indicating that resources alone aren't the issue. The school's African American students perform relatively well compared to statewide peers (41st percentile), but special education students face significant challenges (13th percentile). Nearby charter schools like Resurgence Hall Middle Academy (76th percentile) and KIPP South Fulton Academy (63rd percentile) achieve far better outcomes with similar populations and much lower absenteeism. For parents, the key takeaway is that Camp Creek has proven it can help students excel in advanced math, but addressing attendance and expanding that success to other subjects will be critical for improvement.

Open Quote I love this school. It is a hidden gem that is soo underrated. The staff takes the time to work with students and advocates for those with or without advocates at home. My child has learned to advocate for himself, be creative, and is supported by friends and staff. I am very pleased with the leadership and its focus on students, safety, college and career. I will continue to send my children to Camp Creek where they are cared for and excel academically. Close Quote
