Summary

Poole's Mill Elementary in Cumming, GA, serves approximately 1,384 students in grades PK-5 and is part of the highly rated Forsyth County district, which ranks 7th statewide. The school has earned a 4-star rating and ranks in the 79th percentile of Georgia elementary schools—a solid improvement from its 3-star rating just a few years ago.

One of the most notable patterns at Poole's Mill is the difference in math performance between grade levels. In the most recent testing cycle, 3rd graders achieved a 73.9% math proficiency rate, nearly matching the district average of 73.1% and far exceeding the state's 48.3%. However, by 5th grade, math proficiency drops to 51.4%—a 22.5-point gap that is the largest among nearby schools. For comparison, New Hope Elementary shows only a 1.8-point gap between 3rd and 5th grade math, and Vickery Creek Elementary shows a 5.4-point gap. This pattern has persisted for multiple years, suggesting a systemic challenge in upper-grade math instruction rather than a one-year issue. Science proficiency in 5th grade (48.6%) also trails the district average (65.1%) by a significant margin.

On the positive side, Poole's Mill has made impressive strides in reducing chronic absenteeism, dropping from 16.9% to 10.7% over three years—well below the state average of 17.7%. The school also spends efficiently at $12,384 per student, less than nearby Cumming Elementary ($17,338) and Coal Mountain Elementary ($15,598), while still outperforming both in overall state ranking. The school's closest geographic neighbor, Matt Elementary, ranks higher overall, but Poole's Mill actually outperforms Matt in 4th grade math (66.9% vs. 60.6%). While the school serves a relatively affluent population (22% free/reduced lunch), there are meaningful gaps in outcomes for Hispanic students and English Language Learners that families may want to explore further.

Open Quote This school is amazing! We recently moved from another school within the county and can say that it's the best decision we've ever made. The administration goes way above and beyond ensuring your student is setup for success. They care as much about special needs children as they do the gifted children . We wish our child had this much support all throughout their years at the previous elementary. We have seen more progress in 6 months than at any other time in their schooling. Close Quote
