Summary

Sawnee Elementary School in Cumming, GA, serves approximately 1,591 students in grades PK-5, making it the largest elementary school in its immediate area and part of the highly regarded Forsyth County School District, which ranks in the 97th percentile statewide.

Sawnee consistently outperforms state averages in math and science, though it sits mid-pack among nearby Forsyth County schools. For example, 4th grade math proficiency (73.2%) nearly matches the district average (74.8%), while 3rd grade math (65.7%) trails the district by about 7 points. The school's 5th grade science proficiency (58.7%) is well above the state's 44.2% but remains its largest gap versus the district (65.1%). Sawnee's overall state ranking improved to 161st out of 1,219 Georgia elementary schools (87th percentile), a modest step up from last year. However, its subgroup rankings tell a more nuanced story: while special education students rank in the 73rd percentile and English Language Learners in the 54th, Asian, Hispanic, and White students each rank in the 46-48th percentile when compared to how other schools serve similar populations. This suggests the school's strong aggregate performance is driven by certain groups, while there may be room for growth in serving all students equally effectively.

One of Sawnee's standout strengths is attendance. Its chronic absenteeism rate dropped dramatically from 16.7% in 2022-2023 to 9.6% in 2025-2026—a 42% reduction that outpaces the district's own gains and sits well below the state average of 17.7%. The school also operates efficiently, spending $12,354 per student, which is among the lowest in its comparison group, yet it delivers strong results. Nearby Kelly Mill Elementary outperforms Sawnee in several metrics, while Matt Elementary ranks nearly identically. With a student-teacher ratio of 15.9:1, Sawnee maintains manageable class sizes despite its large enrollment, making it a solid, efficient choice for families in the area.

Open Quote We moved around in Forsyth county due to rezoning. Our son went to Big Creek, Brandywine and now Sawnee. Comparing to Big Creek, this school does a lot more to keep parents and community engaged with their kids. The teachers are informed and educated. Not sure about ranking criteria, of course this area has a mix of homes of different income categories so kids come from different backgrounds, but the school tries it’s best and a little help from parents can make this school rank well. Open Quote Poor, passive leadership. Bullying is ignored, even tolerated, and that is not acceptable. To make it worse, some teachers engage in this behavior as well. If a student does not feel safe at school, that school has failed. Close Quote
