Summary

Liberty Middle School in Cumming, GA, serves approximately 1,256 students in grades 6-8 as part of the highly-ranked Forsyth County School District, which ranks in the 97th percentile statewide. The school has a strong overall reputation, though its state ranking has shifted from a top-50 position several years ago to its current #133 out of 578 Georgia middle schools—still a solid 4-star rating, but a noticeable change from its former top-10% status.

Liberty's standout strength is its Algebra I program: 91.8% of students scored proficient or better in 2025-2026, dramatically outpacing the district average of 71.6% and nearly doubling the state average of 48.1%. This suggests a robust advanced math pathway that prepares students well for high school-level coursework. However, the school faces challenges in other areas. Eighth-grade math proficiency (55.9%) lags 16 points behind the district average (72.1%), and the gap widens as students progress from 6th to 8th grade—a pattern opposite to district and state trends. Physical science performance (48.2%) also trails both district (61.9%) and state (60.9%) averages, placing Liberty below several nearby schools like Vickery Creek Middle School (62.6%) and Hendricks Middle School (65%).

Chronic absenteeism at Liberty (12.4%) is better than the state average (17.7%) but higher than the district average (8.2%), and notably above high-performing peers like DeSana Middle School (5.1%) and Piney Grove Middle School (5.3%). The school serves a relatively affluent population, with about 22% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, and per-student spending has risen to $11,582. While Liberty's overall ranking has slipped compared to some district peers, its exceptional Algebra I results and improving attendance trends show clear areas of strength that families can build on.

Open Quote A principal who is merely counting her days until retirement, most classes with 30+ students, and time wasted on sessions devoted to behavioral training and something called PBIS are just a few of the reasons why this school is ill-suited for meaningful academic achievement. With very weak administrative oversight, classroom discipline is oftentimes abysmal within the presence of teacher apathy. The culture of this school is more acidic than lemon juice. Needless to say, DO NOT allow your children to see foot in this school! Close Quote
