Summary

McLendon Elementary School in Decatur, GA, serves approximately 342 students in grades PK-5 within the DeKalb County School District, where 100% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

McLendon currently holds a 1-star rating, ranking in the 14th percentile statewide—a significant drop from its 2-star rating and 31st percentile just two years ago. Math proficiency rates are well below district and state averages at every grade level: for example, only 31.7% of 3rd graders, 22% of 4th graders, and 20.5% of 5th graders are proficient in math. This stands in stark contrast to nearby Robert Shaw Theme School, just 1.3 miles away, where 84.2% of 3rd graders are proficient in math—despite both schools serving 100% free/reduced lunch populations. Even International Community School (1.63 miles away) achieves 60.8% 5th-grade math proficiency compared to McLendon's 20.5%. Chronic absenteeism is also a major concern at 27.9%, far above the state average of 17.7% and dramatically higher than Robert Shaw's 2.8% or Museum School Avondale Estates' 5.1%.

Notably, McLendon spends $24,746 per student—49% more than International Community School—yet achieves far lower outcomes, suggesting that increased funding alone isn't driving improvement. Test scores also show significant year-to-year volatility, with 4th-grade math swinging from 50% proficiency in 2023-2024 to 15.4% the following year. The school's subgroup performance is uniformly low across all demographic groups, with no bright spots to build upon. While nearby schools like Briarlake Elementary and Laurel Ridge Elementary cluster in the 75th-97th percentile, McLendon sits in a low-performing cluster alongside Avondale Elementary and Indian Creek Elementary. Understanding what the high-performing schools in the same district are doing differently—particularly around attendance and instruction—could provide a roadmap for meaningful change.

Open Quote This is a great school with students from 24 countries speaking multiple languages. The faculty is caring and the students respect each other. The reason the scoring is so low is because of the way the state calculates testing. We have many students that are new immigrants to this country. Everyone has to take the math tests because math is a universal language. Not true, when almost all questions are two stage word problems. You have to be proficient in English to understand the questions. Close Quote
