Summary

Cobb Horizon High School in Atlanta, GA, serves 927 students in grades 6–12 within the Cobb County School District, a district that ranks in the 71st percentile statewide. The school itself, however, has seen its state ranking drop from the 35th percentile in 2021-2022 to the 11th percentile in 2025-2026, placing it well below most nearby schools. One of the most striking changes is the student population: the percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch jumped from 15.7% two years ago to 92.1% today, a dramatic shift that likely reflects redistricting or a new role for the school within the district.

The biggest concern for parents is the graduation rate. At 55.1%, it is roughly 34 points below the district average of 89.2% and the state average of 87.2%. Nearby Walton High School graduates 97.9% of its students, and even Osborne High School—which serves a similarly high-poverty population—achieves 78.9%. The dropout rate of 13.8% is nearly six times the state rate, and chronic absenteeism affects 48.3% of students, compared to 17.7% statewide. Academic proficiency on End of Course assessments is also far below average: only 13.1% of students are proficient in Algebra I (vs. 48.1% statewide) and 12.0% in U.S. History (vs. 38.5% statewide).

There are some encouraging signs. The graduation rate has improved from 30.6% in 2020-2021, and English Language Learner and Special Education students perform relatively better than other subgroups. The school also maintains a favorable student-teacher ratio of 12.7:1, the lowest among comparable schools. However, the comparison to Osborne High School—which outperforms Cobb Horizon on every metric despite similar economic demographics—suggests that high poverty alone doesn't explain the outcomes. Addressing chronic absenteeism and stabilizing the student population will likely be critical to building on the recent gains.

Open Quote I supposedly graduated in December.. I attended the ceremony, my name was called and I didn't receive my diploma afterwards. I was told I had to pick it up at the school, so when I went to the school they told me I had to come back because i "was missing a credit".. I went to the district with my mom to let them know what was happening and they had no idea about this so then when the principal found out I had went he gave me a call NOW just to yell at me and had my number the whole time but never reached out to me before.. 5 months later and I still haven't received anything and I contacted the principal and still haven't had a reply.
