Summary

Sedalia Park Elementary School in Marietta, GA, serves approximately 634 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Cobb County School District, and it sits in a diverse educational landscape where nearby schools range from top-tier performers to those facing significant challenges.

Sedalia Park currently holds a 2-star rating, ranking in the 50th percentile statewide—a middle-of-the-pack position that masks some important variations. The school's greatest strength is its work with English Language Learner (ELL) students, where it ranks in the 63rd percentile statewide, and its White student subgroup performs even better at the 72nd percentile. However, math proficiency tells a more complicated story: 3rd and 4th graders score near state averages (47.3% and 48.1% proficient), but 5th graders drop dramatically to 34.6%—a 13.5-point decline from 4th grade. This 5th grade dip is consistent across subjects, with science proficiency (36.7%) also trailing state (44.2%) and district (47.1%) averages. Chronic absenteeism is a persistent concern at 22.1%, well above the district's 14.2% and state's 17.7%, affecting roughly 1 in 5 students.

Context matters when evaluating this school. Just 2 miles away, Sope Creek Elementary and East Side Elementary rank in the 98th percentile with 5-star ratings and chronic absenteeism below 3%, while Powers Ferry Elementary (just 0.44 miles away) ranks in the 11th percentile. Sedalia Park's free/reduced lunch rate has climbed from 58.3% to 67.4% in two years, reflecting an increasingly economically diverse student body. The school spends $17,582 per student—more than the high-performing neighbors but less than lower-performing schools with higher poverty rates. Compared to similar schools in Marietta City, Sedalia Park performs reasonably well, outpacing Lockheed Elementary and Park Street Elementary despite having a lower poverty rate. The school's trajectory—slipping from the 57th to 50th percentile over three years—suggests that addressing 5th grade transitions and absenteeism will be key to reversing the trend.

Open Quote The worst 2016-17 year! We transferred for 2017-18 to another school because of our experience.
Our child was completely bored, not in the least bit challenged academically. He was nearing the end of first grade and his teacher was still teaching kindergarten grade level material. Most Students are tracking far behind where they need to be grade level wise and therefore the students who are academically on track already do not excel because the teachers dedicate all their time to catch up the remaining 95 of their class.

There are constant behavior issues. I have seen students throw chairs at their teachers.

Major attendance issues.

The administration is very strict and not welcoming to parents. No sense of community in the least even when we had made several attempts to get involved. 22 teachers left after the 2016-17 school year. Close Quote
