Summary

Powers Ferry Elementary School in Marietta, GA, serves approximately 475 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Cobb County School District, and it currently holds a 1-star rating with a statewide ranking in the 11th percentile.

For parents, the most important takeaway is that academic proficiency at Powers Ferry trails both district and state averages significantly. In the most recent testing cycle, math proficiency ranged from just 18.8% in 3rd grade to 26.3% in 4th and 5th grades, compared to district averages of 52.8–56.7%. The school also serves a high-need population—90.3% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, up from 79.2% two years ago—and chronic absenteeism, while improving for three straight years (down from 31.8% to 21.6%), remains above the district rate of 14.2%. On a positive note, the school maintains a favorable student-teacher ratio of 12.4:1 and spends $18,991 per student, which is higher than some nearby schools that achieve far better results. For example, Eastvalley Elementary spends less per student yet ranks in the 81st percentile, suggesting that resources alone aren't driving outcomes.

The contrast with nearby schools is striking. Just 2.4 miles away, Sope Creek Elementary ranks in the 98th percentile with 83–91% math proficiency and only 9.1% of students on free/reduced lunch. Even schools with similar poverty levels outperform Powers Ferry: Fair Oaks Elementary (100% free/reduced lunch) achieves 46.2% proficiency in 3rd grade math versus Powers Ferry's 18.8%. However, there is historical evidence of capability—in 2022-2023, Powers Ferry's 4th grade math proficiency reached 53.3%, actually exceeding the district average. The school's best recent performance shows that improvement is possible, and the declining absenteeism trend suggests attendance initiatives may be gaining traction.

Open Quote I personally really enjoy how the staff at this school seems to be very friendly and warm to their students and fellow co-workers. When I enter the building, the environment feels warm and welcoming. The office staff/administration is always willing to help parents and students when needed in a friendly manner. Thanks to your staff for making this school feel so inviting! Keep up the great work! Close Quote

Open Quote This school should be ranked one of the worst schools in Cobb County. I have been affiliated with Powers Ferry for almost a decade everything about it is in need of some serious help. The teachers try, however with the lack of parental and administrative help, many find themselves teaching in a defeated mode or looking for a position elsewhere. The principal rules rather than leads. He plays favorites with students, parents, and staff members. The school should put in a revolving door because the student population is far from steady. The attitudes are obnoxious and ungrateful; with expectations of handouts and entitlements. Close Quote
