Summary

Sprayberry High School in Marietta, GA, is a large public high school serving 1,769 students in grades 9-12 within the Cobb County School District, and it has historically earned a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger over the past decade.

Sprayberry is currently navigating a period of change. Its state ranking has slipped from 91st (80th percentile) in 2024-2025 to 133rd (71st percentile) in 2025-2026, placing it mid-pack among its highly competitive neighbors. This decline coincides with a significant increase in the percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, which jumped from 35.99% in 2022-2023 to 48.56% in 2024-2025. Despite these shifts, the school shows clear strengths. It consistently outperforms both the district and state in U.S. History, with 57.7% of students proficient in 2025-2026 compared to 54% for the district and 38.5% for the state. Additionally, Sprayberry earns a 4-star rating for its work with African American, Hispanic, and Special Education students, indicating strong support for specific subgroups. Its graduation rate of 89.6% is also slightly above the district (89.2%) and state (87.2%) averages, and its dropout rate of 1.8% is lower than both.

However, there are areas of concern. Algebra I proficiency is a persistent challenge, with only 41.8% of students proficient in 2025-2026, significantly below the district average of 59.4% and the state average of 48.1%. Chronic absenteeism is also elevated at 20.7%, compared to 14.2% for the district and 17.7% for the state. When compared to nearby schools, Sprayberry is most similar to Wheeler High School, which has nearly identical free/reduced lunch rates (48.94%) and chronic absenteeism (22.7%). However, Sprayberry outperforms Wheeler in U.S. History (57.7% vs. 35.4%) while posting similar Algebra I scores. In contrast, top-performing neighbors like Lassiter High School and Walton High School rank in the 96th-98th percentile, highlighting the competitive landscape. Overall, Sprayberry is a solid school with a distinct strength in social studies, a stable graduation rate, and clear areas for growth in math and attendance.

Open Quote Great school, great diversity! I have sent two kids through there and it is the best school in the area. It allowed my kid to excel and in both academics and athletics when it might have been tougher at some of the schools closer by! Housing is also more affordable in the Sprayberry area compared to East Cobb. Close Quote

Open Quote This is my son's freshman year at SHS and we love it. I have a Master's Degree, my husband has a bachelor's so education is important to us. So far we have been very pleased and he loves high school. The block schedule (4 classes a semester) has been terrific for him, easier to manage than 7 classes. The upside of the block schedule is the kids get to explore different academic and elective classes and graduate with 4 classes beyond what is required. We have been very impressed with his teachers and the involvement of the principal. We have become active in the PTSA. We've looking forward to the next three years and would encourage others in East Cobb to join us at SHS. Close Quote
