Summary

Blackwell Elementary School in Marietta, GA, serves 580 students in Pre-K through 5th grade within the Cobb County School District, holding a 3-star rating that places it near the middle of Georgia elementary schools.

Blackwell's academic performance sits below most of its immediate neighbors, which are predominantly 4- and 5-star schools. In the most recent data, Blackwell ranked 592nd statewide, while nearby Davis Elementary (rank 82), Rocky Mount Elementary (rank 138), and Mountain View Elementary (rank 84) all rank in the top 15% of schools statewide. Math proficiency at Blackwell ranges from 44% to 56% across grades, roughly 20–30 percentage points lower than top-performing neighbors. The most striking gap is in 5th-grade science, where only 20.5% of Blackwell students are proficient compared to 67.2% at Davis and 78.6% at Mountain View. This represents a sharp single-year drop from 38.4% the previous year, which may point to a specific instructional challenge or cohort issue worth investigating.

Despite lower test scores, Blackwell invests more per student ($18,036) than higher-performing neighbors like Davis ($15,523) and Rocky Mount ($16,959), and maintains a lower student-teacher ratio (12.1 vs. 14.4 at Davis). The school also serves a higher-need population, with 53.6% of students eligible for free or reduced lunch, up from 39.4% two years ago. One bright spot is attendance: Blackwell's chronic absenteeism rate of 11.1% is lower than the district (14.2%) and state (17.7%) averages, and has improved dramatically from 29.3% in 2021-2022. For parents considering this school, the data suggests that while resources and attendance are solid, academic outcomes lag behind the surrounding area—a pattern that may warrant a closer look at how instructional strategies are being implemented.

Open Quote I am surprised that it isnt ranked higher on this site. My daughter goes to Blackwell and we LOVE it...the classes are much smaller compared to some of the other schools around, the teachers have always been nice and the school its self is always well kept, student oriented, and overall a positive experience. The ASP program is another great aspect we enjoy, the ppl in charge are always wonderful to my daughter. Close Quote
