Summary

Coastal Empire Montessori Charter School is an elementary school in Savannah, Georgia, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 218 students. The school is part of the Savannah-Chatham County school district, which is ranked 127 out of 206 districts in Georgia and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite serving a high-need student population, with 60-68% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, Coastal Empire Montessori Charter School consistently underperforms compared to the district and state averages in academic assessments. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, only 15.6% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 26.2% in the district and 34.9% statewide. The school's statewide ranking has remained relatively low and stagnant over the past several years, ranging from 676 to 1159 out of around 1,200-1,300 Georgia elementary schools.

The school's spending per student has fluctuated, ranging from $10,191 to $16,829 in recent years, which is generally in line with or slightly higher than the nearby traditional public schools in the district. The student-teacher ratio has been between 15 and 16.5, also comparable to the nearby schools. These factors suggest that the school's underperformance may be due to challenges in effectively implementing the Montessori teaching methodology or providing the necessary support and resources for its students, rather than a lack of funding or staffing.

Open Quote The statistics of this website are misleading. CEMCS may have "the highest student-to teacher ratio" of several elementary schools in Chatham County, but that's a faulty statistic. Every classroom at CEMCS has a teacher and a teacher's aide, which lowers the student-to-teacher ratio to about 10:1.

Student test scores are increasing every year for this little school, and the students who attend are lightyears ahead of their traditional school peers in social skills, conflict resolution, research, reading, writing, math... all while learning through activity--not worksheets and lecture.
