Summary

Gould Elementary School in Savannah, GA, serves 559 students in Pre-K through 5th grade and is part of the Savannah-Chatham County school district.

Gould is a school on the rise. After several years ranking in the bottom 15% of Georgia elementary schools, it has climbed to the 31st percentile statewide—a 24-point jump in just two years. This is especially notable because about 93% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, a measure of economic need. The school has also cut chronic absenteeism in half, from 32.2% in 2021-2022 to 15.5% now—a rate that is actually better than both the district (16.6%) and state (17.7%) averages. Nearby, Haven Elementary still struggles with a 29.4% absenteeism rate, while Jacob G. Smith Elementary has a lower rate at 7.9%. Gould also stands out for its strong results with African American students, ranking in the 58th percentile for that subgroup—well above its overall ranking. The school invests heavily in its students, spending $20,594 per child and maintaining a low 10.7:1 student-teacher ratio, the lowest among nearby schools.

Academically, the picture is mixed but improving. Third grade math proficiency jumped 14 points in one year to 43.7%, now above the district average. However, math proficiency declines as students move up—dropping to 34.6% in 4th grade and 25% in 5th grade—a pattern seen at several neighboring schools. Science is a clear strength: 5th grade science proficiency soared from 14.9% to 44.1% in one year, beating the district and nearly matching the state average. While the most recent science score (30.4%) pulled back, it still outpaces Gadsden Elementary (20.4%) and Susie King Taylor Community School (20%). English Language Learner students also perform modestly above the school's overall ranking. Gould is clearly building momentum, and its recent gains in attendance, early-grade math, and science suggest the school is heading in the right direction.

Open Quote Severe bullying issue, complete lack of supervision from the staff and absolutely poor ability to handle children. Worse experience ever! My children had to be removed from the school because of the threats of bodily harm from the other students. Close Quote
