Summary

Benteen Elementary School is a public elementary school in Atlanta, Georgia, serving 306 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Atlanta Public Schools district, which is ranked 139 out of 206 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite the school's relatively low student-teacher ratio and higher spending per student compared to nearby schools like Burgess-Peterson Elementary and KIPP Vision Primary Charter School, Benteen Elementary consistently underperforms the district and state in standardized test scores across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2024-2025, only 40.8% of 3rd graders, 25.6% of 4th graders, and 37% of 5th graders were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to the district's 34.9%, 38%, and 39.1%, respectively.

Benteen Elementary's performance lags significantly behind nearby schools, and its state ranking and rating from SchoolDigger have steadily declined over the past 10 years, from ranking in the 900s to the 1,200s out of around 1,200-1,250 Georgia elementary schools. This suggests the school is facing significant challenges in improving student achievement, despite the higher resources allocated per student. The school's high poverty rates, with 84.64% to 100% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, may be a contributing factor, but a more comprehensive, evidence-based approach to school improvement is needed to address the persistent underperformance.

Open Quote Benteen is an excellent thriving school! My husband and I had many concerns before sending our three kids there. We recently bout a home in the nearby sub-division so we could be closer to work. We decided to give Benteen after not having much luck at the nearby Charter school. After meeting with the principal and learning more about the staff we couldn't have made a better choice! Our children are having the best year academically and fit in well socially. The school is fairly small (maybe 300 students) so we enjoy our kids in the small classroom setting. I do wish they had a few more after school options but the school has been nothing short of a joy.
