Summary

Burgess-Peterson Elementary School in Atlanta, GA, serves 580 students from Pre-K through 5th grade and has become one of the most improved elementary schools in the state, climbing from the 42nd percentile a decade ago to the 90th percentile today.

This school is a standout in Atlanta Public Schools for its exceptional academic results. In math, Burgess-Peterson students outperform state averages by 20 to 29 percentage points across 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades, and 5th grade science scores are 22 points above the state average. The school also achieves top-decile results for every student subgroup, including African American students (89th percentile) and White students (95th percentile). Perhaps most striking is the school's attendance record: only 7.5% of students are chronically absent, compared to 27.6% for the district and 17.7% statewide. This strong attendance culture, combined with effective teaching, helps explain why the school has maintained 4-5 star ratings for four consecutive years.

What makes Burgess-Peterson especially impressive is how it compares to nearby schools. It achieves 90th percentile results while serving a student body where nearly half qualify for free or reduced lunch—a much higher rate than Springdale Park Elementary School (99th percentile, 18% free/reduced lunch) or Mary Lin Elementary School (98th percentile, 5% free/reduced lunch). Meanwhile, Benteen Elementary School spends $9,000 more per student yet ranks in the 24th percentile. Burgess-Peterson also outperforms Charles R. Drew Charter School (88th percentile) while spending less per student. This school proves that high achievement and equity can go hand in hand, making it a compelling choice for families seeking a school that delivers strong results for all children.

Open Quote I don't know why I should be impressed by an organic garden (suggested by another writer). But I am impressed by Burgess-Peterson's test scores, classroom discipline and the overall responsiveness and commitment to success exhibited by the staff and administration. The facility is newer and is an attractive environment that is conducive for learning. Close Quote
