Summary

Sawgrass Lake Elementary School in St. Petersburg, FL, serves 573 students in grades PK-5 and is part of the Pinellas district, with a 3-star rating and a recent upward trend after years of lower performance.

Sawgrass Lake shows a mixed academic profile. English Language Arts (ELA) scores are a strength, with 4th graders outperforming both the district and state averages. However, math scores are a significant weakness, particularly in 3rd grade, where proficiency is 16 points below the district average. This "two-speed" pattern is more pronounced here than at nearby John M. Sexton Elementary, which shows strength in both subjects. A bright spot is 5th-grade science, where 68% of students are proficient, matching the district and beating the state average. The school's performance is also highly volatile from year to year, with individual student cohorts showing dramatic swings in test scores, suggesting that the school's results are sensitive to the specific strengths of each class rather than reflecting a stable system.

A major challenge is chronic absenteeism, which at 35.4% is higher than the district and state averages, and significantly worse than high-performing neighbors like Shore Acres Elementary (20.3%) and North Shore Elementary (24.4%). This persistent absenteeism is likely a key factor holding the school back. Interestingly, Sawgrass Lake spends more per student ($15,198) than Shore Acres ($11,829), but less than struggling Lealman Avenue Elementary ($17,413), showing that higher spending alone doesn't guarantee better results. The most impactful improvements would likely come from reducing absenteeism and strengthening math instruction to match the school's relative success in ELA and science.
