Summary

Meadowlawn Middle School in St. Petersburg, FL, serves 616 students in grades 6-8 and is part of the Pinellas district, a 4-star district ranked 15th in Florida, yet the school itself has consistently ranked in the bottom 25-30% of Florida middle schools over the past decade.

The most critical issue at Meadowlawn is its severe chronic absenteeism, with 41.6% of students chronically absent in the 2023-2024 school year—11 points higher than the district average and a dramatic spike from 28.5% the year prior. This is compounded by a catastrophic failure in 7th-grade math, where only 15% of students were proficient, compared to 53% statewide. While many nearby schools also struggle with 7th-grade math, Meadowlawn’s performance is among the very worst. For example, Bay Point Middle School had 0% proficiency, and Osceola Middle School had 5%, but Tyrone Middle School achieved 28%. The school’s per-student spending of $11,590 is higher than several better-performing nearby schools, suggesting that resources are not translating into outcomes.

There is one bright spot: Meadowlawn excels in Algebra 1, with 73% of students proficient, exceeding both the district (64%) and state (63%) averages. However, this success is overshadowed by consistent underperformance in all other core subjects. The starkest comparison is with Mangrove Bay Middle School, just 1.68 miles away, which is a 4-star school that outperforms Meadowlawn in every subject—for instance, 74% vs. 47% in 6th-grade ELA and 56% vs. 15% in 7th-grade math. This contrast suggests that Meadowlawn’s challenges are deeply rooted in internal practices and culture, not just demographics.

Open Quote One star is to many!! It's a school that is worried about nothing more than what the State thinks of them, rather than TEACHING THE CHILDREN!!! The staff, "office help" was horrid this past yr.. Never enough teachers.. Just to many politics & not enough teaching.. !!! Close Quote

Open Quote The school has some amazing and dedicated teachers. There are also students at this school who take their education seriously. That said, the fact that Administration does not care about teachers is appalling. The professional development consisted of training after training on different things, none of which were supported or followed up on. This school does not value teachers as people, but rather someone to place blame upon every time one of their new policies goes awry. I would caution any teacher, new or experienced, this is not a pleasant place to work. Close Quote

Open Quote How ignornat a teacher that reviewer must be if he/she says the kids behaviours are the administration's fault... not putting blame to the parents that raise the childeren in the first place. Close Quote

Open Quote The administration doesn't support the teachers at all. They allow the students to be disrespectful and do not correct them. Teachers write referrals and the administration never processes them. They place them in a pile and then throw them away. It is the worst adminstration I have ever worked for. The students are also mostly lower class and have awful behavior due to the administration. Close Quote
