Open Quote I'm the mother of a 4 and a 6 year old. We moved here last August, too late to even have the option of applying to magnet schools.
So with some trepidation we put our son in kindergarten at North Shore. Many of our new neighbors indicated surprise, shock even, that we would put him there.
We were pleasantly surprised. His teacher was wonderful, the principal and vice principal were as well. Cooper Dawson, the principal knows every child by name and seems to manage her faculty very well too. There are a lot of teachers who have their own children in the school as well.
I'd be lying if I told you that it was perfect. It's not, but I think it's getting better every year.We had the option to send our son to Ridgecrest in Largo for the gifted program, but instead opted to keep him local. Riding bikes to school just seemed the better option than 2 hours a day on the bus.
There are some students that are wild and undisciplined, for the most part this behavior is dealt with swiftly.
We are moving to New Hampshire next week, else I would be leading the charge to try to get neighborhood kids back in the school.
With a broader base of involved parents and motivated students, the school only stands to get better.
And my husband and I both disagree heartily with the D rating. I think it should be updated. it doesn't feel like a D school.
Good luck!! Close Quote
