Summary

Matthew W. Gilbert Middle School is a public magnet middle school in Jacksonville, Florida, serving grades 6-8 with 622 students. The school is part of the Duval School District, which is ranked 54 out of 67 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Unfortunately, Matthew W. Gilbert Middle School has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of Florida middle schools over the past several years.

The school faces significant challenges, including extremely high chronic absenteeism rates ranging from 30.9% to 81.5%, well above the district and state averages. Academically, the school's performance, as measured by standardized test scores, is significantly below the district and state levels across all subjects and grade levels. For example, in 2024-2025, only 25-42% of students were proficient in ELA and Math, compared to 47-60% for the district and 55-60% for the state. Additionally, the school has a very high percentage of students (83.76% to 88.05%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

Interestingly, the nearby magnet schools, such as James Weldon Johnson College Preparatory Middle School, Lavilla School of the Arts, and Julia Landon College Preparatory & Leadership Development School, significantly outperform Matthew W. Gilbert Middle School on academic measures, with much higher test scores, lower chronic absenteeism rates, and lower percentages of students receiving free/reduced lunch. Despite the higher per-student spending at Matthew W. Gilbert Middle School compared to the district average, the school's academic performance remains significantly below the district and state levels, suggesting that simply increasing funding may not be enough to improve student outcomes without addressing other underlying factors.

Open Quote I think the curriculum is very good. My son loves this school. People seem to judge the area that the school is located and I am not understanding why because there are kids from the poor to the poorest neighborhoods that become most successful. It may take a little longer however it does happen!!! Close Quote
