Summary

Mattie V Rutherford Alt Educational Center is a small alternative middle school in Jacksonville, FL, serving just 67 students in grades 4-8 within the Duval County Public School District, a district that ranks in the bottom third of Florida.

This school faces extraordinary challenges that set it apart from every nearby school. Academic proficiency rates are extremely low—for example, only 12% of 6th graders were proficient in math compared to 61% at nearby Springfield Middle School, and just 7% of 8th graders were proficient in science versus the district average of 43%. The school has a remarkably low student-teacher ratio of 5.5:1, which is far lower than any neighboring school (which range from 16:1 to 22.9:1), suggesting a highly individualized learning environment. However, this investment has not translated into academic gains, likely because the student body faces profound obstacles. Chronic absenteeism is catastrophic, with 75.9% of students chronically absent—more than double the district average and nearly 2.5 times the state average. Additionally, 86.57% of students receive free or reduced-price lunch, the highest poverty concentration among all nearby schools.

The school's performance has been stagnant for over a decade, never ranking above the 4th percentile in the state. As an alternative school, it likely serves students who have been expelled or are at high risk of dropping out, making its metrics reflect the immense difficulty of educating a student body with significant behavioral, emotional, and academic deficits. Interestingly, the school's strongest subject is Civics, where 23% of students were proficient—still far below the district (67%) and state (71%), but a potential area for growth. Even compared to Matthew W. Gilbert Middle School, which serves a similarly high-poverty population just 0.79 miles away, Mattie V. Rutherford's academic outcomes are significantly worse, suggesting the alternative school model itself may be associated with even poorer results than traditional schools serving similar demographics.
