Summary

MacFarland Middle School is a traditional public school in the Brightwood/Petworth area of Washington, DC, serving 486 students in grades 6–8 within the District of Columbia Public Schools. The school has shown one of the most striking improvement arcs in the city, climbing from a 1-star rating in 2021–2022 to a 4-star rating in 2025–2026, when it ranked 21st out of 67 DC middle schools (69th percentile) — making it the highest-ranked traditional public middle school in its immediate cluster, ahead of Ida B. Wells Middle School (29th) and Brookland Middle School (46th), as well as several nearby charters like Howard University Middle School of Mathematics and Science PCS, Capital City PCS - Middle School, and Social Justice PCS.

MacFarland's strongest academic area is mathematics. Its all-grades math proficiency of 27.5% in 2025–2026 far exceeded Ida B. Wells (16.8%), Brookland (9.4%), Howard University MS PCS (14.6%), and Capital City PCS (12.8%). Eighth-grade math is a particular highlight, with 32.8% proficiency — well above the district average of 26.4% and the state average of 24.7%. The school also stands out for strong results among African American and low-socioeconomic-status students, ranking 19th and 12th statewide respectively, and Algebra I proficiency reached 56.9% in 2023–2024, far above the district rate.

However, some areas need attention. Seventh-grade performance lags notably behind 8th grade, with 7th-grade ELA at 30.8% and math at 16.6% versus district averages of 49.2% and 32.1%. Science achievement is also a concern, with proficiency around 4.6% compared to the district's 10.8%. English Language Learners and special education students have not seen the same gains as other subgroups. On the resource side, MacFarland spends $29,496 per student — more than Ida B. Wells and Brookland — and maintains a low student-teacher ratio of 8.8, suggesting a strong investment in staffing.
