Summary

Jockey Hollow School is a grades 6–8 middle school in Monroe, CT, serving 765 students as part of the Monroe School District. While the district ranks in the 63rd percentile statewide, Jockey Hollow is a standout: it has earned a 4-star rating every year since 2015–16 and ranked 40th out of 258 Connecticut middle schools in 2025–26, putting it in the 84th percentile. Test scores run well above state averages in every subject — in 8th grade, 71.1% of students met ELA standards and 72.8% met science standards, versus 50.9% statewide in science. Chronic absenteeism is just 7.0%, less than half the statewide rate of 16.4%, a strong sign of student engagement.

Compared with nearby schools, Jockey Hollow holds its own. Its 7th-grade ELA proficiency (76.4%) is essentially tied with Helen Keller Middle School (76.0%), and its 8th-grade science rate beats Oxford Middle School (69.4%) and Madison Middle School (67.5%). The relative weakness is math: 6th-grade math proficiency is 56.6%, well below Hillcrest Middle School (71.5%) and Helen Keller (68.8%). Still, Jockey Hollow comfortably outranks Seymour Middle School, Derby Middle School, and Shelton's Intermediate School.

What makes Jockey Hollow especially notable is its results for historically underserved students: Hispanic students ranked in the 95th percentile statewide in 2025–26, and low-income students ranked in the 88th percentile — an unusual pattern that suggests targeted, effective support. The clearest vulnerability is special education, which slipped from an 86th-percentile rank in 2023–24 to roughly average since. Families considering this school should weigh its consistently strong academics, excellent attendance, and standout results for underserved groups against the math gap relative to the top local peers.

Open Quote Jockey hollow school lunches suck. you only get a choice of a sandwich, that they only put a tiny bit of what you want on; what ever grease-dripping hot lunch they serve; and fruit soaking in sugar syrup, salad with gross lettuce and cookies. they taste bad and there should be real, healthier food.
