Summary

Academy of Computer Science and Engineering Middle School (ACSE) is a public magnet middle school in East Hartford, CT, serving 669 students in grades 6–8 and operated by the Capitol Region Education Council (CREC). The school serves a high-need population: about 71.9% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, and chronic absenteeism reached 30.7% in 2025–2026—nearly double the state rate of 16.4%. On the positive side, the student-teacher ratio is a favorable 11.7:1, and per-pupil spending of $19,456 is above most nearby schools.

Academically, ACSE ranks in the bottom quartile of Connecticut middle schools. Its 2025–2026 state rank is 202 out of 258 (22nd percentile, 1 star), down from the 44th–48th percentile range in 2015–2017. On 2025–2026 SBAC assessments, proficiency rates are roughly 30% in ELA, 12–23% in math, and 25% in science—20–25 percentage points below state averages. Math is the clearest weakness, with proficiency declining from 23.1% in 6th grade to just 11.8% in 8th grade. ACSE does outperform its own district averages in most subjects, but this is a low bar: nearby East Hartford Middle School, with similar demographics, outperforms ACSE in 7th-grade ELA (39.2% vs. 29.7%) and 8th-grade math (20.0% vs. 11.8%).

The picture is mixed when compared to nearby schools. ACSE significantly outperforms low-performing schools like Milner Middle School and Burr Middle School, and its absenteeism rate is far better than theirs. However, Sunset Ridge Middle School, just 2.9 miles away in East Hartford, achieves a 78th-percentile ranking with 4 stars, 6.7% chronic absenteeism, and math proficiency above 56%. Even more striking, Betances STEM Magnet School—a high-poverty STEM magnet only 1.27 miles away—outperforms ACSE in several subjects and has a much lower chronic absenteeism rate (17.1% vs. 30.7%). For a school with "Computer Science and Engineering" in its name, the math and science outcomes are disappointing.
