Summary

East Hartford Middle School is a large public middle school in East Hartford, CT, serving 971 students in grades 6–8 as one of two middle schools in the East Hartford School District. The school serves a predominantly low-income student population, with roughly 66% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, and it currently ranks 189th out of 258 Connecticut middle schools — in the bottom quarter statewide.

Academic proficiency at East Hartford Middle School is below both district and state averages in every tested subject and grade level. In 2025–2026, math proficiency ranged from 20% to 25%, and science proficiency was 27.8% — roughly 15 to 23 percentage points behind the state average. The school's most pressing challenge, however, is chronic absenteeism: about 34% of students are chronically absent each year, which is more than double the state rate and over five times higher than Sunset Ridge Middle School, the district's other middle school, which has just 6.7% chronic absenteeism. That gap helps explain the stark contrast between the two schools: Sunset Ridge ranks 58th (78th percentile), while East Hartford Middle School ranks 189th. Compared to other regional schools, East Hartford performs better than Hartford's M.L. King Junior Middle School (251st), Milner Middle School (257th), and Burr Middle School (258th), but far worse than Glastonbury's Smith Middle School (24th). Its closest comparable is Illing Middle School in Manchester, which ranks 179th.

Despite the overall low performance, there are some bright spots. African American students at the school rank in the 65th percentile statewide (4 stars), and English Language Learner students have earned strong ratings in recent years. However, special education students rank near the very bottom of the state (4th percentile), a serious concern. There is modest good news in 8th grade math, which nearly doubled from 10.8% proficiency in 2023–2024 to 20% in 2025–2026, though 8th grade science has slipped from 35.7% to 27.8% over the same period. The school remains below state averages in nearly every area, but its strengths with specific student groups suggest opportunities to build on what is working.
