Summary

Arrowwood Elementary School is a PK-6 school in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, serving 390 students in the Douglas County School District No. Re 1, one of the highest-performing districts in the state. The school ranks in the 78th percentile statewide (209th of 943 Colorado elementary schools) and earns 4 stars, putting it solidly above average by state standards.

However, Arrowwood sits in an exceptionally strong neighborhood of schools. Among 11 nearby elementary schools, Arrowwood ranks 9th, ahead of only Copper Mesa Elementary School and Eagle Ridge Elementary School. Top neighbors like Platte River Charter Academy (98th percentile), Redstone Elementary School (98th percentile), and Heritage Elementary School (97th percentile) significantly outperform Arrowwood on most measures. Academically, Arrowwood matches the district average in English Language Arts (63.8% proficient) and is close in math (56.4% vs. 57.2% district), but 5th-grade science is a major red flag: only 30.8% proficient, below the state average and far below every nearby school. The school's 4th-grade math is a genuine strength at 76.3% proficiency, yet 6th-grade math drops to just 40% — the lowest among neighboring schools serving 6th grade.

Attendance and resources present additional challenges. Arrowwood's chronic absenteeism rate of 15.9% is more than double that of Summit View Elementary School (6.3%) and Bear Canyon Elementary School (6.5%), and its student-teacher ratio of 15.8 is the highest in the comparison group. The school's poverty rate has risen from 14.8% to 22.3% over three years. On the positive side, Arrowwood has shown exceptional results with Hispanic students (ranked 6th of 197 schools in 2022-2023) and strong outcomes for male, female, and low-income students. The school has also improved dramatically over the past decade, rising from the 49th percentile in 2015-2016 to its current 78th percentile — a trajectory worth recognizing.

Open Quote My daughter attended kindergarten at this school and we loved it. We found the front office staff helpful, kind and accommodating, and all teachers we came in contact with were tremendous. The focus in my daughter's classroom was on learning to read and write, and my daughter took tremendous strides in both her reading/writing and her math skills. I was very impressed with her progress this year. Three major downsides, however: 1) the kindergarteners didn't begin gym or art class until after mid-semester; 2) my daughter's classroom had 20 students, three of them special needs, and only one harried full-time teacher -- NO consistent aide to help!; and 3) on bad weather days, instead of recess, the students were plopped down in front of the TV -- and not even an educational program, just some random cartoon. Not cool! Close Quote

Open Quote We are pulling our child from this school. We have been here for 2 years and find that there is not a great deal of resources for advanced learners. There have been 3 principals since we have been there and no one really seems to be on the same page for problem solving. They are quick to label kids and not in positive ways. I would not recommend putting your child here if they need to be academically challenged or if they get bored easily. Close Quote

Open Quote I have a second grader and kindergartener at AWE this year. I have been so impressed by how the teachers go above and beyond for my kids. They have been quick to talk with me regarding concerns or praises for both of my kiddos. With my second grader, this has been consitant all three years he has attended AWE. The families are friendly and there is a feeling of community around school. Close Quote
