Summary:

There are 8 middle schools serving grades 6–8 in Pueblo County School District 70, a district ranked 42nd out of 115 in Colorado, with a combined enrollment of 2,291 students. The Connect Charter School is the clear academic leader, ranking 98th of 469 Colorado middle schools (4 stars) and the only school in the district to exceed state averages in ELA (66.5%), math (47.6%), and science (44.3%). Connect also boasts by far the lowest chronic absenteeism at 13.3% — less than half the state rate of 28.4%.

Sky View Middle School is the largest school (565 students) and the strongest traditional neighborhood option, ranking 186th with strong science proficiency (43.8%) and steady three-year rank improvement. Villa Bella Expeditionary Middle School is the most improved, climbing from 260 to 194 in rank on the strength of a nearly 14-point jump in math proficiency — notable because it has the district's highest student-teacher ratio (25.3). On the other end, Liberty Point International School is the biggest concern: ranked 338th with 31% ELA and 18% math proficiency, a science score that plunged from 36.2% to 18.6%, and a 38% chronic absenteeism rate.

District-wide, chronic absenteeism and math are the biggest challenges. Six of eight schools exceed both the district (31.6%) and state (28.4%) absenteeism rates — Beulah Middle School (51.9%) and Craver Middle School (45.0%) are highest. Only Connect and Villa Bella fall below state levels, and those two also tend to outperform academically, suggesting attendance is closely tied to results. Math lags state averages in every school except Connect, with Liberty Point (18.0%), Craver (23.2%), and Vineland Middle School (24.1%) posting the lowest scores. However, the overall trend is encouraging: Sky View, Villa Bella, Vineland, and Pleasant View Middle School all improved their rankings over the past three years, and science is a relative strength at Sky View, Connect, and Craver.
