Summary:

The Boulder Valley School District No. Re2 includes 34 elementary schools serving roughly 12,200 students across Boulder, Lafayette, Louisville, Superior, Nederland, and nearby mountain communities, with grade spans ranging from PK-5 to K-8.

This is a high-performing district overall — ranked 5th of 115 Colorado districts with a 5-star rating — but school-level results vary dramatically. At the top, Bear Creek Elementary ranks #5 in the state with 91% math proficiency, followed by High Peaks Elementary (#7) and Eisenhower Elementary (#10), which achieves top-ten status despite a 22.4% poverty rate. Other strong performers include Superior Elementary (#34) and Boulder Community School/Integrated Studies (#36). At the other end, Alicia Sanchez International School ranks #721 with only 16.9% math proficiency, and Columbine Elementary posts 31.1% ELA proficiency. The achievement gap between Bear Creek and Alicia Sanchez is striking: 63.6 points in ELA and 74.1 points in math.

Poverty and chronic absenteeism are the clearest risk factors. Schools with high free/reduced lunch eligibility, like Alicia Sanchez (78.5% FRL, 35.8% absenteeism), generally rank lowest, while the lowest-poverty schools dominate the top. Still, Creekside Elementary (#69, 30.1% FRL) shows higher-need populations can perform well. Math is the district's biggest academic challenge — most schools post ELA scores 15-25 points higher than math, and Bear Creek is the only school where math exceeds ELA. Among K-8 schools, Eldorado K-8 (#56) and Horizons K-8 (#93) lead the way, and Horizons made the district's biggest ranking jump, improving 93 places. Small schools can also excel: Flatirons Elementary has just 163 students but ranks #91, while tiny Jamestown Elementary (17 students) and Gold Hill Elementary (10 students) are too small to report test data. Notably, High Peaks and Boulder Community share a campus at 3995 East Aurora Avenue yet have very different absenteeism rates.
