Summary

Whittier Elementary School is a K-5 school in central Boulder, Colorado, serving 269 students as part of the Boulder Valley School District (BVSD), a top-performing district ranking in the 96th percentile statewide. Its most recent SchoolDigger ranking (2025–2026) improved to 320th out of 943 Colorado elementary schools (66th percentile), up from near the 52nd percentile the prior two years. The student body is notably more economically diverse than many surrounding schools, with 42.0% of students qualifying for free/reduced lunch in 2024–2025. The school also has a favorable student-teacher ratio of 13.1:1, among the lowest in the local comparison set.

Academically, Whittier's 2025–2026 CMAS proficiency rates are above the state average in all three subjects but below the BVSD average: ELA at 60.7% (district 65.3%, state 44.7%), math at 41.7% (district 56.1%, state 37.3%), and 5th-grade science at 40.5% (district 55.5%, state 36.1%). Math is especially weak relative to district peers — only University Hill and Columbine have lower math proficiency among nearby schools. In ELA, Whittier outperforms Crest View, University Hill, and Columbine, but trails most other area schools. This places Whittier in the middle-to-lower tier of Boulder's elementary options, well behind high performers like High Peaks, Eisenhower, and Foothill, which rank in the 93rd percentile or above.

Whittier's biggest challenge is attendance: chronic absenteeism was 29.3% in 2024–2025, up sharply from 22.0% and nearly double the district average of 17.5%. It is the second-highest rate among nearby Boulder elementary schools, behind only Columbine (32.4%). There is promising news, though — ELA proficiency jumped from 43.1% to 60.7% and math from 32.6% to 41.7% year over year, while district scores were essentially flat. However, a grade-level slide is evident: 3rd-grade ELA is above the district average, but 5th-grade ELA falls well below it. Low-income students at Whittier rank in the 17th percentile statewide, a stark equity gap. With strong staffing but mid-to-low outcomes, Whittier is a school to watch — next year's data will reveal whether the gains are durable or a one-year anomaly.
