Summary:

The 11 schools in 90605 include six elementary, two middle and three high schools, including two alternative high schools, so families have options across school levels. In 2025–2026, the schools’ average proficiency was 46% in ELA, 34% in math and 27% in science, all below state figures of 49%, 38% and 36%. The clearest area-wide concern is science, where the average was 9 percentage points below the state.

La Serna High leads in ELA and science, with 70% and 53% proficient; its 11th-grade results also exceeded state figures in ELA, math and science by 12, 12 and 15 points. Ocean View Elementary leads in math at 69% and is second in ELA at 66%; its math result is 23 points above the next-highest school, East Whittier Middle. By contrast, Frontier High (Continuation) has the lowest ELA and science results, while Sierra Vista High (Alternative) has the lowest math result. Richard L. Graves Middle is also substantially below state figures in all three subjects; in grade 7, East Whittier leads Graves by 31 points in ELA and 29 in math.

Area averages edged up by about a point in each subject between 2024–2025 and 2025–2026, but the gap with the state widened in math and especially science. Loma Vista Elementary made notable gains—9 ELA points, 3 math points and 17 science points—while Lake Marie Elementary rose from the 25th to the 61st percentile in SchoolDigger’s statewide rankings and is above the state in ELA and math. All schools report free/reduced lunch eligible data for 2024–2025, ranging from 51% at Ocean View to 94% at Carmela Elementary; this is context, not an explanation for test results. Because schools serve different grades and some have small enrollments, same-grade comparisons can be more informative than schoolwide averages.
