Summary:

South Whittier Elementary includes six schools in the South Whittier Elementary district: five K–6 elementary schools and one middle school serving grades 6–8. In 2025–26, the six-school average was 41% in ELA, 29% in math and 23% in science, compared with state results of 49%, 38% and 36%. The clearest area-wide finding is that every subject average fell below the state, with the largest shortfall in science: 13 percentage points.

Lake Marie Elementary led all six schools in every subject, with 53% in ELA, 40% in math and 35% in science. Its results were 24 points higher than Los Altos Elementary in ELA, 21 points higher in math and 25 points higher in science. Lake Marie exceeded state results in ELA and math, while Los Altos was below the state by 20, 19 and 26 points, respectively. Loma Vista Elementary and Howard J. McKibben Elementary formed the next-strongest group, exceeding district results in all three subjects. Schoolwide results can hide grade-level differences: Lake Marie’s overall lead reflects especially strong 5th- and 6th-grade results.

Results improved from 2024–25 to 2025–26: the area averages rose 5 points in ELA, 2 in math and 2 in science. The gap to the state narrowed in ELA and math but widened by about 1 point in science. SchoolDigger’s rankings also rose for Lake Marie, from the 25th to the 61st percentile, and Loma Vista, from the 43rd to the 57th; Graves and Los Altos declined. The reported free/reduced lunch eligible measure for 2024–25 ranged from 86% at McKibben to 94% at Carmela Elementary; these figures are context, not an explanation for results. Absenteeism offers another point of comparison: it was about 9% at McKibben and Loma Vista, but 18% at Lake Marie, despite Lake Marie’s leading scores. Because Richard L. Graves Middle serves grades 6–8 while the other schools serve K–6, their schoolwide results are not grade-for-grade comparisons.
