Summary

Sunridge Charter is a K-8 charter school serving 256 students in Sebastopol, California, operating within the Twin Hills Union Elementary district and consistently earning a 4-star rating for its above-average academic performance in English and math compared to the state.

Academically, the school's strengths are clear: students outperform state averages in English Language Arts and Mathematics. However, a closer look reveals some important nuances. Performance varies significantly by grade, with middle school math being a particular strength but third-grade math and eighth-grade English showing room for growth. Furthermore, while the school serves students from low-income families very well, there is a notable achievement gap between female and male students. When compared to nearby schools, Sunridge sits in the middle among local charters—outperforming Wright Charter academically but trailing Sebastopol Independent Charter, which has much higher test scores and far better attendance.

The school's most pressing challenge is its high rate of chronic absenteeism, which at 25.9% is the highest among the compared schools and exceeds both district and state averages. This is a significant concern because regular attendance is foundational to learning. Despite this, the school maintains its solid academic standing, suggesting effective support for students who are present. Other areas for attention include science proficiency, which lags behind the district average, and a higher student-teacher ratio than most neighboring schools like Gravenstein Elementary or Park Side Elementary.

Open Quote We have been so happy with this Waldorf-inspired charter school. The teachers and staff are amazingly dedicated, skilled, creative, and caring. The Waldorf foundation is strong but not dogmatic, truly providing students with a well-integrated and developmentally savvy curriculum that beautifully supports the development of each child's "head, heart, and hands". I have seen many graduating classes at this point, and I am continually impressed by the students' confidence and comfort in themselves, their kindness and open heartedness with each other, their creativity, multi-faceted intelligence, academic skills, artistic abilities, and innovative thinking. I've been deeply touched by the beauty and depth of performances, festivals, assignments, projects, instruction, relationships...I have a masters degree in education and have never been as impressed with a school. I'm grateful to SunRidge School for giving my children an outstanding education and giving our whole family a dynamic, caring, thoughtful, fun, and celebratory community. Close Quote
