Summary:

ZIP code 95401 has 11 schools: seven elementary schools, one middle school, two high schools and one alternative school. Eight have 2025–2026 test results; three have results only for 2024–2025, so the fairest year-to-year comparison is among the eight with results in both years. In 2025–2026, school averages were below California’s in all three subjects: 31% in English language arts (ELA) versus 49% statewide, 22% in math versus 38%, and 21% in science versus 36%. The most important finding is that school results vary widely within the ZIP code: the gap between the highest- and lowest-scoring schools was 49 percentage points in ELA, 37 in math and 39 in science.

Santa Rosa High led 2025–2026 ELA at 58%, while Oak Grove Elementary/Willowside Middle led math at 43% and science at 48%; Oak Grove was above the state in all three subjects. J.X. Wilson Elementary also stood out among the K–6 schools, scoring 46% in ELA and 34% in math. At the bottom, Abraham Lincoln Elementary had the lowest ELA and math results, 11% and 9%, while Ridgway High (Continuation) was lowest in all three subjects, with 10% in ELA, 5% in math and 8% in science. The two high schools have sharply different reported outcomes: Santa Rosa High’s graduation rate was 94%, compared with Ridgway’s 82%, but chronic absenteeism was high at both—26% and 70%, respectively.

Among the same eight schools, average scores rose from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026 by 3 percentage points in ELA, 5 in math and 5 in science, and their average gaps with the state narrowed by 2, 3 and 1 points, respectively. Helen M. Lehman Elementary had the largest gains in math and science—12 and 14 points—though its results remained well below state levels; its SchoolDigger statewide ranking moved from the 6th to the 11th percentile. By comparison, Oak Grove Elementary/Willowside Middle moved from the 78th to the 75th percentile, while Abraham Lincoln Elementary ranked at the 1st percentile in 2025–2026. Income figures offer context, not an explanation: the 2024–2025 free/reduced-lunch-eligible share was 27% at Oak Grove and 78% at J.X. Wilson, compared with 81%–92% at the other K–6 schools with current results.
