Summary

Helen M. Lehman Elementary serves 373 students in grades K–6 in Santa Rosa’s Santa Rosa Elementary district. Its latest results show below-district and below-state proficiency in English language arts (ELA), math, and science. ELA is the clearest concern: 16% of students were proficient, compared with 31% districtwide and 49% statewide, leaving the school 15 points below its district and 33 points below the state.

Compared with nearby K–6 schools, Lehman’s ELA result is also weaker than the local average: six nearby schools averaged 21%, about 5 points higher. Math offers a more encouraging picture in the upper grades: Lehman’s 5th-grade result of 19% was ahead of five of six nearby schools, and its 6th-grade result of 29% tied for the highest among them. Across all grades, however, math proficiency was 23%, below the district’s 25% and the state’s 38%. The school’s all-grades results were also below district and state levels in science.

Results have improved since 2022–2023 in math, from 17% to 23%, and science, from 5% to 16%, while ELA fell from 21% to 16%; the state gap narrowed in math and science but widened in ELA. SchoolDigger placed Lehman at the 11th statewide percentile and gave it 1 star in 2025–2026. One notable exception is its Special Education Students ranking: SchoolDigger placed the school at the 69th percentile, 58 points above its overall percentile, indicating stronger measured results for this group. The student–teacher ratio was 24.8 in 2024–2025, tied for the highest among nearby schools with reported ratios. The school reported that 90% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible in 2024–2025; California is identified as a statewide free-meals state, so this is context, not an explanation for results. Chronic absenteeism fell from 48% in 2021–2022 to 28% in 2025–2026, but the latest rate remained above the state’s 18% and district’s 20%.
