Bancroft Middle serves 948 students in grades 6–8 in San Leandro, in the East Bay. Its latest results show a mixed academic picture: science is a relative strength among nearby schools, but the clearest concern is math, where 24% of students met the standard, compared with 38% statewide and 29% in San Leandro Unified.

Compared with seven nearby middle schools that have current-year results, Bancroft ranks fourth of eight in ELA, fifth in math, and third in science. ELA proficiency was 40%, above the nearby average of 35% but below the state’s 49% and the district’s 42%. Math was 24%, just below the nearby average of 25%, and well below the state and district. Science was stronger against nearby schools: 31% versus their 26% average. It remained below the state’s 36% and nearly matched the district’s result.

Scores have risen since 2022–23 in all three subjects, but the state gap has narrowed only in ELA and math. ELA rose from 28% to 40%, narrowing its state gap from 19 points to 10; math climbed from 16% to 24%, with its gap shrinking from 19 points to 14. Science increased from 28% to 31%, but moved from 3 points above the state to 5 points below. SchoolDigger places Bancroft at the 40th percentile statewide, with two stars, up from the 24th percentile in 2021–22 but still below the midpoint. Its 2024–25 student-teacher ratio was 22.3, and 79% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible that year; these are context, not explanations for achievement. One notable group result is SchoolDigger’s statewide measure of how well the school serves White students: Bancroft ranked at the 79th percentile in 2025–26, compared with the school’s overall 40th percentile, up from the 53rd percentile in 2023–24. Attendance has also improved: chronic absenteeism fell from 34% in 2021–22 to 17% in 2025–26, below the state’s 18% and district’s 20%.
