Summary:

ZIP code 94580 has 11 schools—four elementary, three middle and four high schools—nine in San Lorenzo Unified and two in separate KIPP districts. Nine schools have 2025–26 test results; the two KIPP schools’ results are from 2024–25. Across the nine newer results, the unweighted school averages were 30% in ELA, 23% in math and 20% in science, compared with state rates of 49%, 38% and 36%. The most important finding is that results vary sharply from school to school, while the area’s school averages are below state rates in all three subjects.

KIPP Summit Academy and KIPP King Collegiate High stand out in their 2024–25 results: Summit scored 83% in ELA, 65% in math and 68% in science; King Collegiate scored 74%, 48% and 48%. Both exceeded that year’s state rates in all three subjects. Among schools with 2025–26 results, Bay Elementary led elementary schools in math at 44%, 6 points above the state, and science at 36%, about level with the state. Arroyo High led the reported high-school 11th-grade results, with 47% ELA, 27% math and 34% science, though each was below the state rate. At the lower end, Hesperian Elementary had the lowest elementary results in all three subjects (12% ELA, 9% math and 11% science); Edendale Middle scored below Bohannon Middle in ELA, math and science.

Recent results show no across-the-board improvement: for the same nine schools, average ELA fell by 2 points from 2024–25 to 2025–26, math rose by 1 point and science fell by less than 1 point, while state rates increased in all three subjects. There were exceptions: East Bay Arts High gained 8 points in ELA and 21 in math, while Bohannon Middle improved in all three subjects. SchoolDigger ranked Hesperian at the 1st percentile in 2025–26, down from the 13th percentile in 2023–24; Summit and King Collegiate were at the 94th and 91st percentiles in 2024–25. Reported free/reduced lunch eligible shares (sy 2024–25) ranged from 65% at Arroyo to 85% at Edendale; these are context, not an explanation for scores. Student-teacher ratios also varied, from 14.9 at East Bay Arts to 24.6 at Arroyo. KIPP’s older results are useful context, but not a same-year comparison with the other schools.
