Summary

Edendale Middle is a public school serving 483 students in grades 6-8 in the San Lorenzo Unified district, which faces significant academic challenges across its schools.

Academic performance at Edendale Middle is very low, with only about 13% of students proficient in English and 7% in math, placing it consistently among the lowest-performing middle schools in the state. This is notably lower than other schools in the same district, such as Bohannon Middle and Washington Manor Middle, and dramatically lower than nearby KIPP Summit Academy, a charter school. A concerning pattern shows a steep drop in 7th-grade scores. Despite these results, Edendale receives more funding per student than most comparison schools and has a relatively low student-teacher ratio.

The school has made important progress in reducing chronic student absenteeism since the pandemic. However, its effectiveness with students from low-income families and those receiving special education services has been very low or declining in recent years. The stark contrast with higher-performing schools in neighboring districts like Castro Valley Unified, such as Creekside Middle, suggests that district-wide support and different educational models can lead to better outcomes even in communities with similar needs.

Open Quote Will hire anyone at this point, has a horrible field filled with trash, students are very rude and around the middle of march there were students everywhere spraying, throwing, and dumping (dirty) water on each other Close Quote

Open Quote Unfortunately my daughter got stuck to this school. This is the worst school ever. Their teaching skills are poor and personal appearance is not appropriate for a school environment. This may not be a high level professional school but please “dress for success” and let our kids follow that example. We should all practice what we preach! Close Quote
