Summary:
Zip code 94605 has 14 schools: seven elementary schools, one middle school, five high schools and one alternative school. Test results are available for 13 schools, with results reported across 2025–2026 and 2024–2025. In 2025–2026, the eight-school averages were 16% in English language arts (ELA), 14% in mathematics and 15% in science, compared with state results of 49%, 38% and 36%. Schools’ results also varied widely within each subject. The most important finding is that the latest-year group averaged well below the state in all three subjects, with the largest shortfall in ELA.
The leading schools differ by year and subject. In 2025–2026, Independent Study Sojourner Truth led ELA at 31% and mathematics at 32%, while Burckhalter Elementary led science at 33%; each remained below the state in its leading subject. Rudsdale Continuation High had the lowest results in the group: 3% in ELA, 0% in mathematics and 3% in science. In 2024–2025, Oakland Unity High led ELA at 66%, above the state’s 49%, and Francophone Charter School of Oakland led mathematics at 49% and science at 46%, above state results of 37% and 33%. Aspire Triumph Technology Academy was lowest in all three subjects that year, at 10% in ELA, 8% in mathematics and 0% in science.
For the eight schools with results in both years, the ELA gap with the state narrowed by about 2 points, from 35 to 33 points; mathematics kept pace with the state, while the science gap widened by about 2 points. A notable exception to Sojourner Truth’s below-state all-grades results is its 11th-grade performance in 2025–2026: students exceeded the state by 4 points in ELA, 12 in mathematics and 9 in science. Reported context also differs: in 2024–2025, free/reduced lunch eligible students made up 38% at Francophone Charter and 41% at East Bay Innovation Academy; their ELA results that year were 58% and 52%. These figures describe different school contexts and do not establish what explains test results.
