Summary

Grant Union High is a large public high school serving approximately 2,000 students in grades 9-12 within the Twin Rivers Unified district in Sacramento, an area where the vast majority of students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Despite operating in a challenging context, the school demonstrates clear strengths, most notably a graduation rate of over 90%, which significantly outpaces its district and the state average. Its English Language Arts performance is also a relative bright spot, nearly matching the state average, and the school has shown a consistent upward trend in its statewide ranking over the past four years. However, proficiency in math and science remains well below state standards, and chronic absenteeism, while the lowest among several comparable nearby high schools like Vista Nueva Career and Technology High and Discovery High, is still a significant concern at 32.8%.

When compared to other schools, Grant Union High achieves its solid outcomes with moderate per-student spending, performing better than some nearby schools that spend far more. The school is particularly effective with English Language Learners, but its effectiveness varies across different student groups. While the school within the struggling Twin Rivers Unified district is an outlier in many positive ways, nearby Rio Linda High (in the same district) and Futures High show that higher achievement in similar contexts is possible, indicating clear areas for targeted academic improvement.

Open Quote Administration is not supportive of complaints, teachers are given excessive amount of latitude when dealing with students. Low scores indicate teachers are not teaching. In hindsight I would have NEVER brought my child to this school. Biggest mistake we have ever made. Close Quote
