Summary

Washington Elementary serves 245 students in kindergarten through grade 5 in San Diego, California, as part of San Diego Unified. In 2025–2026, its proficiency rates were below both the state and district in English language arts (ELA), math, and science. Science is the clearest concern: just 7% of students were proficient, compared with 36% statewide and 42% in the district, and Washington had the lowest science rate among four nearby same-district K–5 schools.

Math is Washington’s strongest subject relative to state and district results: 16% were proficient, compared with 38% statewide and 46% districtwide. ELA was 22%, versus 49% statewide and 54% districtwide. Among five nearby same-district K–5 schools, Washington ranked second-lowest in ELA, fourth in math, and last in science; its science rate was 14 percentage points below those schools’ 21% average. Grade 3 ELA is a relative bright spot: 33% were proficient, higher than all nearby same-district schools except Grant K-8. Results were lower in grades 4 and 5, including 14% ELA proficiency in grade 5.

Scores have not kept pace with the state over the four years reported: from 2022–2023 to 2025–2026, ELA fell 11 percentage points to 22%, math fell 1 point to 16%, and science fell 7 points to 7%. Science had risen to 21% in 2024–2025 before dropping 14 points the next year. SchoolDigger placed Washington in the 8th statewide percentile with 0 stars in 2025–2026, down from the 18th percentile the year before and the 39th in 2018–2019. Chronic absenteeism improved from 65% in 2021–2022 to 37% in 2025–2026, but remained above the state’s 18% and district’s 17%. In 2024–2025, the student–teacher ratio was 22.2, and 74% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible. SchoolDigger’s 2021–2022 subgroup rankings also showed a 19th-percentile standing for effectiveness with students with disabilities, compared with 35th overall; its English learner percentile fell from 72 in 2017–2018 to 32 in 2021–2022.
