Summary

Ross Elementary is a K-5 public school serving 187 students in the San Diego Unified district, maintaining a consistent 3-star rating while serving a community where a significant majority of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, Ross shows mixed results, with English proficiency near the state average but math and science scores below both district and state averages. A notable and unusual finding is a large performance gap between male and female students. The school has made a remarkable and positive turnaround in student attendance, dramatically reducing chronic absenteeism from over 57% to 18.5%, which is now better than many neighboring schools and a key strength. Compared to nearby schools like Sequoia Elementary and Lafayette Elementary, Ross generally lags in test scores but excels in getting students to school regularly.

When looking at the broader landscape, schools with similar student populations can have very different outcomes. For instance, Chesterton Elementary achieves much higher academic proficiency with similar demographics and lower per-student spending, suggesting that effective school practices are crucial. Ross's story is one of stability and a significant win in improving attendance, while it continues to work on boosting academic achievement for all students, particularly in closing the internal gender gap and improving outcomes in specific grades and subjects.

Open Quote The new principle Rosemary Cruz is turning this beautifully nestled Clairemont school around. She's gained multiple grants including one to teach the "Eight Laws of Successful People. Costco has sponsored their reading program and even made sure all the students have backpacks. There's a general excitement about our neighborhood school and all the new changes thus far. We even have a meet up to all walk the kids into school on Wednesday. Another program that Mrs. Cruz started. I love dropping my son at his diverse TK class. His teacher has her masters and is focused on child lead learning that has my son asking me to help him research and chase down information and experiences he's interested in. I could not be more impressed with Ross and it's community of parents and teachers. Close Quote
