Ellerhorst Elementary

Summary:

Ellerhorst Elementary is a public elementary school in Pinole, California, serving students from kindergarten to 6th grade as part of the West Contra Costa Unified School District. The school has a diverse student population, with a mix of Hispanic, White, Asian, and African American students.

Academically, Ellerhorst Elementary outperforms the district and state averages in English Language Arts and Mathematics on Smarter Balanced Assessments, particularly in 3rd grade. However, the school's performance declines in the upper grades, with only about a quarter of 6th graders proficient or better in these subjects. The school also faces a significant challenge with chronic absenteeism, which has increased from 6.6% in 2018-2019 to 32.3% in 2022-2023, higher than the district and state averages. Additionally, Ellerhorst Elementary has a relatively high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with 35.9% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.

Compared to nearby schools, Ellerhorst Elementary's academic performance is generally better than Collins Elementary and Sheldon Elementary, but lags behind schools like Olinda Elementary and West County Mandarin. The school's performance also varies among different student subgroups, with White students outperforming Hispanic and low-income students. To address these challenges, the school and district may need to implement targeted interventions and support systems to improve student attendance and academic achievement, especially for its Hispanic and low-income students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Ellerhorst is a hidden gem in WCCUSD, and its quality is belied by the test scores. There are a number of factors that affect the overall test scores (like EL population and 3 self contained special ed classrooms) but that don't effect the overall quality of education. The kindergarten classrooms this year only have 17 kids per class! There is incredible parent involvement, with at least one parent a day volunteering in every primary class. The classes go on numerous field trips a year, and there's an awesome after school program including many enrichment classes like chess and cooking. It's a gorgeous campus and feels more like a private school than a public school in a low ranked district. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
