Summary:
Hercules, California, has five schools spanning elementary through high school: three elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. In 2025–2026, their unweighted average proficiency was above California’s in English language arts (55% versus 49%), math (44% versus 38%) and science (40% versus 36%), but individual schools varied substantially. The clearest overall finding is that Ohlone Elementary led the five schools in all three subjects.
Ohlone Elementary had 65% proficient in ELA, 66% in math and 53% in science—16, 27 and 17 percentage points above state results, respectively. The lowest results depended on the subject: Hercules Middle led ELA with 71%, 32 points above Lupine Hills Elementary at 39%; Lupine Hills also had the lowest science result, 31%, while Hercules High had the lowest math result, 36%. Lupine Hills was not low in every subject: its math score was 42%, above the state’s 38%.
Results moved unevenly from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026: the five-school average increased by about 1 percentage point in each subject, while the area’s science advantage over the state narrowed from 6 points to 4. Lupine Hills made the largest math gain, 7 points, and Hanna Ranch Elementary gained 10 points in science. SchoolDigger ranks Ohlone at the 84th percentile with four stars, compared with the 50th percentile and three stars for Lupine Hills. As context, in 2024–2025, free/reduced lunch eligible shares were 35% at Ohlone, 40% at Hanna Ranch and 74% at Lupine Hills; these figures describe the schools and do not explain their results. Because schools serve different grade spans, all-grades comparisons do not replace same-grade comparisons.
