Summary

Ellerhorst Elementary is a public elementary school in Pinole, California, serving 303 students in grades K-6. As part of the West Contra Costa Unified School District, which is ranked 1111 out of 1565 districts in the state, Ellerhorst Elementary consistently outperforms the district and state averages in academic achievement.

In the 2024-2025 school year, 50.28% of Ellerhorst Elementary students were proficient or better in English Language Arts/Literacy, compared to 33.39% for the district and 48.81% for the state. In mathematics, 44.07% of Ellerhorst students were proficient or better, compared to 25.92% for the district and 37.3% for the state. The school's performance is particularly strong in 3rd and 5th grade English Language Arts/Literacy, as well as 3rd grade mathematics. While Ohlone Elementary and West County Mandarin have even stronger academic performance, Ellerhorst generally outperforms other nearby schools in the district.

However, Ellerhorst Elementary faces some challenges, including a concerning trend of increasing chronic absenteeism, rising from 24.9% in 2022-2023 to 27.5% in 2023-2024. Additionally, the school's spending per student has decreased from $10,124 in 2021-2022 to $6,653 in 2023-2024, which is lower than the district average. These factors may impact the school's ability to maintain its academic excellence, and the district's overall low ranking and 1-star rating suggest broader systemic challenges that may be affecting the performance of Ellerhorst Elementary and other schools in the area.

Open Quote Ellerhorst is a hidden gem in WCCUSD, and its quality is belied by the test scores. There are a number of factors that affect the overall test scores (like EL population and 3 self contained special ed classrooms) but that don't effect the overall quality of education. The kindergarten classrooms this year only have 17 kids per class! There is incredible parent involvement, with at least one parent a day volunteering in every primary class. The classes go on numerous field trips a year, and there's an awesome after school program including many enrichment classes like chess and cooking. It's a gorgeous campus and feels more like a private school than a public school in a low ranked district. Close Quote
