Summary

Beattie Middle School is a public middle school serving about 1,070 students in grades 6-8 in Highland, California, as part of the Redlands Unified School District, and it performs solidly in the middle tier of schools statewide.

The school has several notable strengths, including a significantly lower rate of chronic student absences (16.2%) compared to other local middle schools like Moore Middle (23.5%) and those in the neighboring San Bernardino City Unified district, and it excels in science, outperforming both the state average and its district peers. Beattie is also particularly effective in supporting some vulnerable student groups, such as homeless students and African American students, achieving high rankings for their progress. However, the school's mathematics scores are a relative area for improvement, and its statewide ranking has seen a gradual decline in recent years.

Being in the Redlands Unified district appears to be an advantage, as all its middle schools generally outperform those in San Bernardino City Unified, despite often having lower per-student spending. An interesting local comparison is Colonel Joseph C. Rodriguez PREP Academy, a high-performing school in the San Bernardino district, which shows that exceptional results are possible in similar community contexts.

Open Quote We have had two children attend this school...Unfortunately, our experiences have been very very poor. With two seperate principals we have asked for extra help for our students with very negative results... Teachers have not done what they have agreed to do to help our children accurately record their assignments nor have the ensured that they were completed. The principal has lied and caused our child to cry and loose sleep by telling him that he should be in special education. The district "supervisors" have failed to hold any teacher or pricipal accountable for doing their jobs and routinely back their teachers fully, no matter what they do or how they do it. We have many many friends who experience the same non-caring teachers and administrators at this school. We have just now begun informing the board of education and will contact our attorneys and media outlets if necessary, though we hope it will not be necessary. The school board will have to provide some executive insight into this school. Close Quote
