Summary:

Zip code 90004 has 16 schools: 11 elementary schools, one middle school, three high schools and one K–12 alternative school. The reported test results span 2024–2025 and 2025–2026, with the clearest comparison among 10 K–5 schools in 2025–2026; comparisons are most useful within similar grade spans. The clearest standout is Third Street Elementary, which led those 10 schools in ELA, math and science, scoring 91%, 94% and 81%—42, 55 and 45 percentage points above the state, respectively.

The elementary results vary widely: school-to-school ranges were 52 percentage points in ELA, 58 in math and 57 in science. The lowest ELA and math results were at Frank del Olmo Elementary (39% and 36%), about 10 and 2 points below the state; Cahuenga Elementary had the lowest science score, 25%, 11 points below the state. Across the elementary group, average math was 55%—17 points above the state—and 9 of 10 schools exceeded the state in math; average ELA was 56% and science 40%. Among the three high schools, ELA averaged 65%, 16 points above the state, while math averaged 29%, 9 points below, and science 28%, 5 points below. Virgil Middle was 5 points above the state in math, but 1 point below in ELA and 8 below in science.

Across 11 schools with results in both years, average improvement per school was 5 points in ELA, 4 in math and 8 in science, faster than state gains of about 0, 1 and 3 points; gains were not universal. For example, Van Ness Avenue Elementary rose 22 points in ELA, while Dr. Sammy Lee Medical and Health Science Magnet Elementary fell 3 points in math and 5 in science. SchoolDigger ranked Third Street 6th of 5,804 California schools in 2025–2026, up from 36th of 5,869 in 2023–2024. As context, elementary schools reported free/reduced lunch eligible figures for 2024–2025: 51% at Third Street, 93% at Charles H. Kim Elementary and 98% at Frank del Olmo. Class-size ratios also differed: Third Street reported 23.1 students per teacher, compared with 15.5 at Harvard Elementary; these figures are context, not explanations for achievement.
