Summary

The International Studies Learning Center (ISLC) is a standout public school serving grades 6-12 within the Legacy High School Complex in South Gate, part of the Los Angeles Unified district, where it achieves exceptional results for its 867 students.

ISLC's most impressive achievement is its near-perfect 98.2% graduation rate, the highest among all nearby schools and far above state and district averages, paired with an exceptionally low dropout rate of 0.9%. The school also excels at keeping students engaged, with a chronic absenteeism rate of just 13.5%, which is significantly better than most other local high schools. This success is particularly notable because the school is exceptionally effective in supporting its student population, ranking in the 92nd percentile for students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. While its mathematics scores are an area for growth, its English Language Arts instruction is a major strength, with 11th-grade proficiency soaring to 79%.

Compared to neighbors, ISLC delivers these outstanding outcomes efficiently, spending less per student than other high-performing schools like Earl Warren High in Downey Unified. Within its own complex, it outperforms schools like Visual and Performing Arts at Legacy High School Complex, demonstrating how its specific international studies focus and culture drive results. The school's consistent 4-star rating and rapid improvement in attendance after the pandemic solidify its reputation as a stable, high-achieving choice for families in the area.

Open Quote This school’s office staff is very rude and disrespectful. They asked me to change my work hours to make sure my kid shows up to school daily. Like finding a job in California is not hard enough. Like many of us don’t have other kids in our house to support along will bills and rent. Okay I bite let’s say I do or could change my schedule “can you please tell me why your staff or security team cannot keep my child in his class all day.” Why is it so hard for your school or staff to prevent kids from leaving campus isn’t that your job once my child is dropped off. Very rude staff still waiting for school to return a phone call I made last week. Worse mistake I made was taking my child out of South Gate High School and putting him in a new School that’s already on its way down. Close Quote

Open Quote International Studies Learning Center is one of, if not the best school you can find in South Gate. It is not very popular because it is a very small school that keeps to itself. It's a public school but tends to focus all subjects on international relations. Even the homerooms(advisory) are classes where students are taught different international studies. It is very unique for the area of Los Angeles. They also offer many opportunities for travel. The teachers there are very dedicated to helping the students succeed and become great global citizens. The staff also works hard to ensure students get the best once they leave the school. Overall it is an amazing school. Having graduated from there and experiencing VP Joe Biden visiting, I can say I am a proud Dragon for life. Close Quote
