Summary

Vista High is a small public high school serving 186 students in grades 9-12 within the Lynwood Unified School District, operating in a high-need community where nearly all students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, the school faces significant challenges, with proficiency rates in English (7%) and math (0%) far below other district schools like Lynwood High and Marco Antonio Firebaugh High. It also struggles with an extremely high chronic absenteeism rate of 83% and a graduation rate of 72%, which is lower than both the district and state averages. Despite having smaller class sizes and higher per-student spending than nearby schools, these resources have not translated into stronger student outcomes, and the school has shown minimal improvement over the past decade.

The school's small size and these specific challenges suggest it may serve a specialized population. While it shows relative effectiveness with English Learner students, its overall performance lags dramatically behind other options in the area. For comparison, schools with similar student demographics just a short distance away, such as the International Studies Learning Center in the Los Angeles Unified district, demonstrate significantly higher graduation rates and lower absenteeism, indicating that the challenges at Vista High may be specific to the school's structure or programs rather than inevitable given its community.

Open Quote I'm a graduate from Vista High and also have a child whom I have custody of attending this school. Vista High is a better school than Lynwood High and Firebaugh High combine. The teachers are magnificent; they dedicate more of their time to the students than the teacher I had at Lynwood High. My sister is attending Firebaugh; well there is nothing special about it besides the controversy. Nevertheless, Vista is a great school. If your child is ever sent to attend this school, it the thing that could ever happen because they will have a 95% of graduating. Close Quote
